Call for Artists—BOK Loading Area Design + Signage
BOK Loading Area Design + Signage Brief
Issued: January 5, 2016
Deadline for response: January 22, 2016
Scout is commissioning an artist to design and deliver a series of 2D pieces across the five (5) rear loading docks located at the rear of the Bok building, the former Edward W. Bok Technical High School in South Philadelphia.
The loading docks are located to the south of the building on Dudley St (between 8th and 9th St). Dudley Street is a typical South Philly residential street; narrow with low-rise row-homes facing the southern façade of Bok. Since the school’s closure in 2013, local residents have used Bok’s southern sidewalk and loading areas for parking. Scout took ownership of the building in July 2015 and has temporarily permitted the majority of sidewalk parking to continue, with the exception of loading docks. Towing notices have been placed at loading dock areas, which must remain clear and unobstructed. Signage is clear but not always heeded – see below photos for typical parking conditions.
The intention of this brief is to commission an artist to create bespoke signage pieces painted directly onto the five (5) existing roller doors and/or sidewalk areas in front of the loading docks, which would clearly communicate that parking is not permitted in loading dock areas at any time, but would do so in a playful and legible manner. As long as the specifics of the parking rules are clear (i.e. parking is not permitted 24/7 and violators will be towed), there is freedom as to how the pieces look and feel.
The project deliverable is the production of a series of artworks incorporating signage to be displayed or installed at each of Bok’s five rear loading bays. Artwork must be designated to the roller doors and adjacent loading bay ramp and cannot impact the exterior historic masonry.
Proposals for work (including scale drawings, renderings or other visuals) should be submitted to Scout for consideration by 12 pm on Friday, January 22, 2016.
Proposals must include a fixed-price quotation (for all design and complete installation), an estimated start and completion date, and all relevant dimensions and materials.
The proposed quotation should not exceed the project budget of $1,500 (including all labor and design work). We ask that you limit your proposals to 5 pages and include two examples of previously completed work (does not count toward 5-page maximum).
Please submit packages via email to email@example.com with copy to firstname.lastname@example.org and email@example.com by Friday January 22, 2016, 12 pm.
